Job Summary:
Creates a positive culture in line with overall vision for the hospital as determined by the board of directors and executive management.
Provides professional medical leadership for quality assurance and utilization management initiatives.
Participates in provider network development and new market expansion.
Maintains current knowledge on and ensures compliance with federal and agency regulations and represents the hospital to the medical community.
Job Requirements:
Education and Work Experience:
Completion of a recognized course of study such that s/he is a lawfully licensed provider in the State of California, Washington, Oregon or Hawaii: Required
Master's Degree in business administration, management, health care management, or related field: Preferred
Five years' in-patient medical experience as a physician: Required
Three years' management experience: Required
Clinical practice and experience in the development and management of utilization review and quality assurance programs or equivalent relevant experience/education: Required
Licenses/Certifications:
Licensed provider in the State of California, Washington, Oregon or Hawaii: Required
Medical license MD (MD) or Medical license DO (DO) or Physician and Surgeon A (MDA) or Physician and Surgeon C (PSC) or Physician and Surgeon G (PSG): Required
Essential Functions:
Directs the effective functioning and operations of the in-patient physician organization.
Creates a positive and safe work environment.
Champions all hospital approved quality and safety initiatives.
Serves as quality improvement liaison, addresses patient complaints, provides information to hospital risk management and senior leadership, and participates in medical staff peer review program as requested.
Serves as the physician advisor for in-patient services on utilization review matters.
Manages functions of Quality Assurance/Utilization Review Committees.
Identifies utilization review studies and evaluates adverse trends in hospital utilization, unusual provider practice patterns, adequacy of benefit/payment components and comparative differences in utilization trends by HMO and PPO providers.
Recruits, interviews, and proctors new Hospitalist physicians.
Oversees the completion of new physician orientation and conducts annual performance reviews with each regular/core hospitalist physician.
Communicates to hospitalist physicians on policies, procedures, and related practice information and work flows.
Provides medical expertise with respect to planning and establishing goals and policies to improve medical management.
Works collaboratively with member services, medical services, provider relations and the executive director to prepare, deliver and encourage implementation of recommendations to provider member for actions which would improve utilization.
Participates in the review and assessment, and provides advice on, complex, controversial and/or unique claims which are outside the realm of medical policy.
Solicits and evaluates advice of outside medical consultants and physicians with respect to complex or controversial claims or experimental and innovative techniques.
Participates in provider network development and new market expansion as appropriate.
Participates in the review, assessment and negotiation of provider contracts as appropriate.
Collaborates with the executive director in the development and implementation of physician education.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
